Notes

Tue Aug 6, 2013, 9:16 AM
I typically don't respond to Notes here on dA.  Just a FYI.  Many times in the past, they've been inquiries for free work.  And I don't work for free! I have mouths to feed and a roof to maintain!

If you require work, please email.

Thank you!

Commissions

Tue Mar 19, 2013, 10:07 AM
Soon, I'll be adding a commission rate sheet.   No, I will NOT be using deviantArt's "commission widget".  Big reason why is that dA takes 20% from the earnings gained with that widget.  WTH, dA?

You made a widget - big whoop.  That doesn't get you 20% off of MY work.

Another issue, points as payment.  Answer: NO.  Because no.  I can't pay my bills with my dA points.  Cold, hard cash via paypal.  That's how the commissions are gonna roll.

*I just read a comment where dA is making the commission widget free.  I'm going to do a bit of research to see if this is true.

In the meantime, no commission widget and my rates sheet is a comin.....

I wish I had the know-how to create my own journal skin.  <-thinking out loud....

Upcoming cons that I will be going to:

Emerald City Comic Con (March 1-3.  Seattle, WA).  Heading up Friday, hitting the con both Saturday and Sunday.  New portfolio(s) in tow.  Fingers crossed in hoping I obtain new contacts and/or work.

Stumptown ComicFest (April 27-28. Oregon Convention Center, Portland, OR.)  Both days?  Maybe.  Bringing along the portfolio(s), too.

Rose City Comic Con (September 21-22.  Oregon Convention Center. Portland, OR).  Excited about this one!  It's been YEARS since I've gone to this and now, it's been reinvigorated with new blood - with co-production by the folks of ECCC and RCCC.  Might even get a table! Sell stuff!

There's also talk of a new creator/artist centric convention under development in Dallas, TX.  I've got good friends down thar and this would be a great reason to head on down and pay them a visit.  And sell some art.  ;)

No SDCC nor WonderCon this year.  I'm considering maybe HeroesCon.  Baltimore? NYCCC? I'm still thinking of Spectrum Art Live in May (Kansas City).  Have NOT ruled that out.  A huge part of getting more professional work and to be seen as a professional artist is to get OUT and about. Travel is a requirement.  Gotta do it.

Finally,

I had the flu bug for over two weeks, finally getting fully fit and functional just last week.  Last Monday was the first day in over a week where I could actually eat a meal and keep it down.  It put me behind in lots of work - but  the excitement I have for what may be in 2013, is enough to get me focused on the road ahead both in the very near future and beyond!

Fingers crossed.

Water Tank Speedy Commissions!

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 4, 2012, 11:00 AM
Our water pressure tank just went kapoot.  Last week, it was the control box to our water pump.  So, the last week and a half we've spent oodles of money (USD), to get running water to our home.  So...as it's near Christmas, I decided to five this commission thingy a shot.  I'll open up 10 slots for commissions!

The sooner I get the requests/payments, the sooner I can complete them by Christmas.  They'll be 8x11 (standard US paper size).  These will be speed paint/full color commissions!  That way, they can be done ASAP. Price: $30

*Note:  I don't do naughty-XXX style of art.  SORRY!

DIGITAL, btw.

Tell me:  Landscape, pin-up, or burly.  <--your choices.  Very fantasy in tone.

Payment:  Paypal

Your info (name, dA name, email...all the usual stuff to make this magic happen!)

So, for a minimal price, you can receive an original piece of art that can be perfect for gifting...or keep as your own.  Choice is yours.

>>>ETA - 12-24-2012:  I picked up a couple of commissions that were significantly more (and therefore, more involved) - so all is covered.  For now!<<<

(thank you very much in advance)

Promote! New Blog Gallery!

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 8, 2012, 10:53 AM
I followed the advice and tutorial by a certain kickass artist, Dan dos Santos.  A May 31 entry of the fantastic blog, Muddy Colors, "How to Make a Free Website in Less Than 10 Minutes".  It's about online galleries and websites for us artists.  While I've got a portfolio going via deviantArt, decided a new gallery-style blog wouldn't hurt.  So I began.....and it's begun.... ;)

Link to the "Art of Patricia Smith" gallery blog: patriciaartist.blogspot.com/

BTW, it's also assessable via my older blog, Studio Smugbug and vice versa.

Link to Dan dos Santos' Muddy Colors blog entry: muddycolors.blogspot.com/2012/…

If you're an inspiring artist, you'll find having deviantArt accounts aren't enough.  You'll need to branch out more, as well as become a wee bit more professional in how you display your work online.  Part of the growing process of being an artist.

Expose 10

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 26, 2012, 9:54 AM
Good morning!

First off, finally saw Dark Knight Rises last night.  Much better than I expected.  What really surprised me was Anne Hathaway.  She turned out to be my favorite of the film.  Selina Kyle's (she's never referred to as "Cat Woman" in the movie, but as a "cat burglar" in one and mostly Selina throughout) interaction with Bruce/Batman were the best of the film, IMO.  Real highlights.  But aw well...moving along...

Expose 10 is about to be out and the pre-order is up over at Ballistic Publishing's site.  It's another of Ballistic's art annuals I'm both honored and proud to be a part of.  They're really high quality books.  Anywhoos, the link:

Favorites

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 6, 2012, 10:37 AM

I love opening my dA page and seeing what art is featured in the "Favorites" section.  Especially love it when it's a variety of different styles.  Incredibly inspirational.

That's all I got to say right now.  Have a great day!

Premium Status....

Journal Entry: Wed May 16, 2012, 7:13 PM

to change my username.  That is IT.

*And one of our kitties is missing.  Not a whole lot of painting done today, due to stress (gawd, SHE must be stressed out; all of our kitties are indoor only), and spending time to look for her.  I miss her.  I really do.  We have five, but she was the one who cuddled with me almost every night.  She likes to spoon.  And she lets me use her as a pillow (she's 16-lbs so, she's a perfect size for a furry pillow).

I'm going back out to look for her again in a bit.....

Very little play. I've got a new gig.  It's not part-time right now, I'm in training so it's very long hours and many days in a week.  My schedule is all over dah place.  I've little time this past week to work on anything else, like.....freelance stuff.  Won't actually be able to until later...later tonight. After a long day at the new job.  Thankfully, it's art related. Learning a new skill and all that.

Until I can take down hours at this job, I'm pretty booked.  Gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.

If you're not in Japan and worried sick about relatives who are, there is a website that may help you locate them.  We're using it right now as I type this.  My bf's family are in Japan (he's half-Japanese, btw) and we're not entirely sure the location of one of his uncles.  Could be in Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture); you know, it's what is featured in that video of the tsunami being viewed heavily on youtube now.  He also could be in another town which is much farther away.  Soooo, hence the following website.

Phone lines are (as expected) busy and right now impossible to get a hold of anyone in Japan.  We're going to continue to try, though.  As well as send out emails.  My heart is going out to everyone in Japan as well as others like us who have loved ones there.

Here's the link to the people finder:  japan.person-finder.appspot.co…

ETA:  Just heard from the bf that the uncle and everyone else is fine. And the uncle is not in Sendai (HUGE relief there, whew).  BF is going to call back his aunt (whom he got a hold of via phone) later and try talking to her again.  And sorry about the poor grammar of this latest journal entry.  I'm just so damn discombobulated over all this right now.

*I've got a new online site where I display my work:  www.behance.net/smugbug &…;<---A Behance portfolio.  I'll be concentrating more recent (personal and professional) work there.

*I have a art show coming up.  March 3 and it's part of the First Thursday Artwalk in this town.   Pretty excited - I was asked to show my stuff, so I'm a very humbled!

*I no longer work part-time down at the bookstore.  Very little hours = time to go.  I'm doing a couple of things at the moment to compensate for the lost $:  upping the anty on commissions and pro-work; which is why I've not been around the 'net much.   I've also been looking for part-time work, because not sure that if this (still) shaky economy would allow me to rely solely on my art to survive.

Hell, I've got responsibilities, like a house/mortgage, to take care of.  A perspective based in reality is needed!

* Oh and I've become caught up with a little show called Supernatural!  I like it!

and all.

I guess I should update the journal.  Let's see, what's new?  A local weekly, The Alchemist will be publishing a feature on moi.  I'm thinking it's this week's issue and would be out today, if that's so.  Been busy with art, of course and still working part-time at that book store.  I'm no longer paying for a premium membership here, too.  Why?  Why should I?  Eh, that's about the sole reason I just didn't update the membership.

No huge breaking news.  Nothing extremely pressing.  Just a bit tired as I was up til 5:30ish AM and woke up at 8:30ish.  But the art with the assistance of coffee is keeping me awake.

Note: since my last journal entry, Frank Frazetta has passed away.  More than any other artist, he was the one who influenced me.  And that day, May 10th, was probably one of the saddest days of my artistic being. Long live, Frazetta.  :(
